It's time to begin not only finals week, but also it is time for me to begin getting ready for the opening weekend of our baseball season. I got word yesturday that I am slated to be the opening day starting catcher (a posistion I have not played since my junior year of high school). Last season as in any season, I told our management that I would be willing to do whatever it was I needed to do for the team, and for the season I was our bullpen catcher (the guy who warmed up the pitchers that we going to come in to relieve the current pitcher).
Over the off-season, we lost our back-up catcher to a team within our league, and just recently we lost our starting guy to the Northwoods League (an independant league in the northern 2/3 of Minnesota). Right now I am filled with nervousness, and questions of whether or not I can 1) do it or 2) if my body will hold up throughout the season. I know that as soon as I put on the pads for the first time, take the first pitch, and get a couple of throws off everything from my past experiences will boil to the surface, and I will revert to the cocky, agressive guy behind the dish that I was years ago.
Our season begins with a 2 game set over next weekend, so it will be a good test of how quickly my body can bounce back in between games. With a handful of weeks were we play 4-5 games a week, I need to make sure I stay in tip-top shape (which is an oxymoron for baseball players as it is :)).
On a personal note, things are going along well. I just need to get through finals week here, and baseball will take up the emotions of most of the people that I know leaving for home over the summer. It's not necessarily a fair trade, but baseball isn't a bad thing to be in my head 24/7.
Take care.
